Tirumala Kalyanotsavam Seva is a sacred ritual performed at the Sri Venkateswara Temple in Tirumala, Andhra Pradesh, India. The temple is dedicated to Lord Venkateswara, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, and is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in the world. The Kalyanotsavam Seva is a significant ritual performed daily at the temple and is considered to be highly auspicious by devotees.

The Kalyanotsavam Seva is a ritual of marriage between Lord Venkateswara and Goddess Padmavathi, an incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi. The ritual symbolizes the divine union of the Lord and the Goddess and is believed to bring prosperity and happiness to the devotees. The ceremony begins with the Lord being adorned with traditional wedding attire and jewelry, followed by the worship of the Lord and the Goddess.

The Kalyanotsavam Seva is performed in the main sanctum sanctorum of the temple, in the presence of the temple priests and a large number of devotees. The priests conduct the ritual as per the traditional Vedic rituals and offer various types of puja and offerings to the Lord and the Goddess. The devotees, who are allowed to witness the ceremony, participate in the puja and offer their prayers to the Lord and the Goddess.

One of the highlights of the Kalyanotsavam Seva is the “Mangalasasanam” which is the divine wedding ceremony of Lord Venkateswara and Goddess Padmavathi. This is the most important and auspicious part of the ceremony and is performed with great devotion and reverence. The ceremony ends with the Lord and the Goddess being adorned with new clothes and jewelry, and the devotees are blessed with the prasadam (sacred offerings) of the Lord and the Goddess.

The Kalyanotsavam Seva is a highly coveted ritual and devotees often wait for months or even years to get a chance to witness the ceremony. As it is performed daily, it is considered to be an opportunity to receive blessings and grace from the Lord and the Goddess. Devotees also believe that the ritual brings good luck and prosperity to them, and they often make donations to the temple in gratitude for the blessings received.

Kalyanotsavam Seva Process

Srivari Kalyanotsavam is dedicated to Lord Sri Malayappa swami (rather than the main deity) and his consorts Sridevi and Bhudevi. The marriage is officiated by a purohit, and an archaka is consecrated to perform other rituals on the bridegroom’s behalf. The wedding ceremony follows Vaikhanasa Agama rituals and begins with the Panchamurthi Puja.

This is followed by the recitation of Vedic mantras and the pronouncing of the bride’s and bridegroom’s family pedigree. The Lord’s and his brides’ idols face each other, separated by a tera (screen). The bridegroom and brides are allowed to see each other after the priests perform appropriate homas and the screen is removed at the appropriate auspicious moment. This is followed by Mangala sutra Dharana, Talambralu, and the garlands of the Lord and his consorts.

The practice of Kalyana utsavam began in 1536 AD when Tallapakam Tirumala Ayyangar had the idea of celebrating Lord Malayappa swami’s marriage festival, which was held over five days in the Tirumamani mandapam on the main temple premises.

This Seva is not performed during important festivals such as Srivari Brahmotsavam, Pavitrotsavam, Pushpayagam, and on solar and lunar eclipse days. The seva lasts approximately one hour.
